We sometimes hear from biologists and from fellow believers that evolution contradicts our Christian faith. It is the primary example of the conflict thesis between religion and science. But The Clergy Letter Project has over 15,500 (as of August 2021) signatures of clergy on a statement that suggests “evolutionary theory [is] a core component of human knowledge, fully harmonious with religious faith.” Initiated in 2004, the Clergy Letter Project now has signatures of thousands of leaders from multiple religious traditions (the one for Christian clergy is here) and is gathering clergy signatures on a climate crisis letter.
The Clergy Letter Project also has a number of resources. Since 2006, they have hosted an Evolution Sunday (now Evolution Weekend) in mid-February inviting hundreds of congregations to address themes at the interface of religion and science. They also produce a regular newsletter and have an archive of sermons.
